Basket Weave Hat Free Crochet Pattern

This hat was inspired by a commercial for a ski lodge. I don’t ski personally (way too clumsy), but I love the idea of a winter getaway.

As I watched this commercial, I could see myself curling up with a good book, a mug of hot chocolate steaming, sitting in a over-sized leather armchair next to a roaring fire. Of course the first thing I think is what kind of hat would I crochet myself for such an occasion?

At the time, I recently learned the basket weave stitch and had only used it as an afghan stitch. I quickly got to work to figure out how to incorporate this stitch into a hat pattern. It was the perfect mix of classy and cozy.

The hat pattern works up quickly and looks great in any color. You can customize it to coordinate with your winter coat or your favorite fall outfit. For these reasons, it's my go to pattern.

I take my crochet with me everywhere I go, and it seems I sell this hat hot off the hook every time. Whether I’m on vacation or in a waiting room, this hat grabs the eye of someone and a conversation soon follows. Next thing I know, it’s sold, right there, right now.

You can even add a little extra by sewing a crochet flower to the side in a complementary color.

This pattern is for the following size:
⦁ Adult (13 +) circumference = 22 – 23”

SUPPLIES
⦁ Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in the color of your choice.

⦁ Hook Size: H/5.00mm
⦁ Yarn Needle

STITCHES USED
Sc – single crochet
Sl st – slip stitich
St(s) – stitch(es)
Ch – chain
Dc – double crochet
FPdc – front post double crochet
BPdc – back post double crochet

Note: The piece is worked in rounds. Do not turn.

HAT

1) Sc 7 in magic circle. Join with sl st into first st in round. (7)

2) Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in same st as first chain. Work 2 dc in each remaining sts around. Join with sl st into first st in round. (14)

3) Ch 2, FPdc in the same st as chain. BPdc in the next st. *Work 2 FPdc in the next st and 1 BPdc in the next st *Repeat 6 times. Join with sl st into first st in round. (21)

4) Ch 2. FPdc in the next st. Work 2 BPdc in the next st. Work 1 FPdc in the next 2 sts, and 2 BPdc in the next st *Repeat 6 times. Join with sl st into first st in round. (28)

5) Ch 2. FPdc in the same st as chain. FPdc in next st. Work 1 BPdc in the next 2 sts. *Work 2 FPdc in the next st and 1 FPdc in the next st. Work 1 BPdc in the next 2 sts *Repeat 6 times. Join with sl st into first st in round. (35)

23) Sc in each st around. Sl st and finish off. Weave in tails.
