Jake the Dog is man's best friend this winter. He will keep you warm when it's time for adventure outside in the cold.


Cartoon Network has been a favorite in my house since the Powerpuff Girls. So it was only a matter of time before my son got hooked on Adventure Time. Two best friends going on adventures in a magical world was right up his alley.

Of course he requested a Jake the Dog hat that year. The one part he really wanted was his snout to stick out. So I got to work and he was very involved in making sure it was exactly how he imagined. I called him my supervisor of quality control.

The hat is worked in rounds and all the pieces are made separately and sewn to the hat. To assemble Jake the Dog. The snout is made by making a tube that is sewn on as an upside down U-shape.

This pattern is for the following sizes:
⦁ Adult (13 +) circumference = 22 – 23”
⦁ Youth Lg (6-12) circumference = 20 – 21”
⦁ Youth Sm (3-5) circumference = 19 – 20”

SUPPLIES

⦁ Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, Gold
⦁ Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, White
⦁ Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, Black
⦁ Crochet Hook, Size G
⦁ Yarn Needle

STITCHES USED

Sc – single crochet
St(s) – stitch(es)
Sc2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together
Sl st – slip stitch

Note: The piece is worked in rounds. Do not join or turn.

HAT 

(with Gold)

1) SC 6 in magic circle. Use a yarn marker to mark the beginning of each round. (6)

2) Work 2 SC in each stitch around. (12)

3) Work 2 SC in each stitch around. (24)

4) Work 1 SC in each stitch around. (24)

5) *Work 1 SC in next stitch, and 2 SC in the same stitch. *Repeat 12 times (36)

6) Work 1 SC in each stitch around. (36)

7) *Work 1 SC in each of the next 2 stitches, and 2 SC in the same stitch. *Repeat 12 times (48)

8) Work 1 SC in each stitch around. (48)

9) *Work 1 SC in each of the next 3 stitches and 2 SC in the same stitch. *Repeat 12 times. (60)

10) Work 1 SC in each stitch around. (60)

11) *Work 1 SC in each of the next 4 stitches and 2 SC in the same stitch. * Repeat 12 times. (72) [For Youth Sm: skip to step 14.]

12) Work 1 SC in each stitch around. (72)

13) Adult Size: *Work 1 SC in each of the next 5 stitches and 2 SC in the same stitch. *Repeat 12 times. (84)

Youth Lg Size: *Work 1 SC in each of the next 11 stitches and 2 SC in the same stitch. *Repeat 6 times. [78]

14 – 33) Work 1 SC in each stitch around. (84 [78] [72])

Slip Stitch in first stitch in round. Finish off and weave in ends.

SNOUT 

(with Gold)

1) SC 6 in magic circle. Use a yarn marker to mark the beginning of each round. (6)

2) Work 2 SC in each stitch around. (12)

3 - 6) Work 1 SC in each stitch around (12)

7 – 8) Work 1 SC in the next 9 stitches, then work 1 slip stitch in the next 3 stitches. (12)

9 – 11) Work 1 SC in each stitch around (12)

12 – 13) Work 1 SC in the next 9 stitches, then work 1 slip stitch in the next 3 stitches. (12)

14 – 18) Work 1 SC in each stitch around (12)

19) *SC2tog *Repeat 6 times. (6)

Weave in each stitch around and pull to close. Finish off and leave tail to sew to hat.

1) SC 6 in magic circle. Use a yarn marker to mark the beginning of each round. (6)

2) Work 2 SC in each stitch around. (12)

3 – 7) Work 1 SC in each stitch around. (12)

Slip Stitch in first stitch in round. Finish off and leave tail to sew to hat.

NOSE 

(with Black)

1) SC 6 in magic circle. (6)

Slip Stitch in first stitch in round. Finish off and leave tail to sew to snout.

(Make 2 with White with Black outline)

1) With White, SC 6 in magic circle. Use a yarn marker to mark the beginning of each round. (6)

2) Work 2 SC in each stitch around (12)


3) Work 2 SC in each stitch around (24)

Slip stitch in first stitch in round and finish off.

4) With Black and in back loops only, Slip stitch in the same stitch as the previous slip stitch. Work 1 slip stitch in each remaining stitch around.

Slip stitch in the first stitch in the round. Finish off and leave tail to sew to hat.

MOUTH 

(with Black)

Embroider a mouth by slip stitching a smile under the snout:

Pull loop from inside hat to front of work. Slip stitch in spaces between stitches to embroider mouth. Finish by pulling tail to inside of hat. Finish off and weave in ends.
